Gardens by the Bay (Aug 2012)

As soon as I read about the opening of the Gardens by the Bay, I immediately made plans to travel to Singapore. I chose Jetstar as it was offering very attractive return fares from Kuala Lumpur. My sister with her two young kids, accompanied me on the trip.

On our 2nd day in Singapore, we took the MRT to the Bay South station. As we exited the station, we were greeted by the imposing grove of supertrees: eco-friendly man-made trees. From afar, we could make out tiny human figures crossing the walkway that connected two supertrees. A quick elevator ride up 6 floors was all it took to transport us to the walkway. The view was amazing and the cool evening air was refreshing.

Our next stop was the Flower Dome. The highlight of this conservatory has to be the Baobab trees. In one of my favorite books - Antoine de Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince - I was introduced to them as pests on the prince's home planet. It is incredible to be able to see them up close as I don't think I'll be visiting deserts anytime soon.

We entered the Cloud Forest and were gobsmacked by the huge waterfall that stood in front of us. Be prepared to get a little wet. With nightfall engulfing Singapore outside, the "Cloud Forest" transported us to the eerie and cool forests found on the sides of mountains. Watch out for the strategically placed air vents that dump cold air on unsuspecting visitors.

On our last day, we visited Changi's Terminal 3. The kids had fun riding the slides and we all took turns posing at the 3D art installation. Those photos - with 3D effects - will surely be conversation starters when we share them with our friends back in Kuala Lumpur.
